Emerging Artist Competition

Cedille Records, founded by James Ginsburg in 1989, has supported Chicago’s classical music community for over 30 years by bringing the area’s most significant classical music artists to a worldwide listening public. With seven Grammy Awards and 21 Grammy nominations for its recordings, Cedille Records, a nonprofit record label, has distinguished itself year-after-year.
Recently, Cedille launched an innovative Emerging Artist Competition with the winner eligible to have a recording made and released in August 2022 on the Cedille label. As with all Cedille albums, the winner’s recording will be released internationally and will receive full public relations and marketing support in order to bring the winner to the attention of audiences, presenters and reviewers all over the world.
In addition, the winner will join a stellar roster of Cedille artists that includes violinists Jennifer Koh and Rachel Barton Pine, cellist Wendy Warner, clarinetist Anthony McGill and ensembles Eighth Blackbird, the Pacifica and Dover Quartets, and Third Coast Percussion.

On November 21, 2021, Chicago-based saxophonist Julian Velasco was chosen to as the winner of Cedille's First Emerging Artist Competition. Raised in Los Angeles, Velasco's musical background draws from classical, jazz, experimental and popular styles. He is the soprano saxophonist of ~Nois saxophone quartet and a founding member of indie-pop trio Dial-Up Stepmom. His passion for collaborating with living composers has led him to premiere more than thirty works from composers including Billy Childs, Oznat Netzer, Zhou Tian, David Biedenbender and Annika Socolofsky.
